The Great Australian Barrier Reef is an immense strip of coral composed of about 2,900 reefs, 600 continental islands, and 300 coral atolls. Located between the beaches of northeastern Australia and Papua New Guinea, which is 2,200 kilometres long, with a width ranging from 30 km to 740 km.

It can be seen from space and is the largest structure in the world made solely by living organisms. The reef structures are made up of billions of tiny organisms, known as coral polyps. It supported great biodiversity and was elected one of the world heritage sites of Humanity in 1981 and was also elected by the American TV channel CNN as one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
